Theo Tobiasse: Textural Emergence

This selection of works from AMoA's permanent collection represents the later years of Theo Tobiasse's prolific and innovative career. As a teenager living in Paris, Tobiasse and his family were forced into hiding during the city's Nazi occupation from 1942 - 1944. Tobiasse’s work -- influenced by surrealism, expressionism and modern primitivism -- explores themes of mythology, biblical stories, exile and his own past. All of these elements combined to present rich metaphors for the 20th century.

Art Shapes the World: 10th Annual Youth Art Month Juried Exhibition

The time is approaching to enter your schools Art Works for the Alexandria Museum of Art’s 10th Annual Youth Art Month Juried Exhibition, Art Shapes the World.

All Central Louisiana Schools are invited to participate. There are four age categories; K- 2nd; 3rd-5th; 6th-8th; and 9th-12th.  Each category will be awarded a 1st Place, 2nd Place, 3rd Place and two Honorable Mention awards. Each school may submit up to six pieces of artwork for each category. The artwork will hang in the museum galleries from March 1 – May 31, 2014.

Stephen Knapp: New Light

"Lightpaintings" are pieces of glass that is cut, shaped, polished, treated with layers of metallic coatings, mounted on stainless steel, and illuminated with light bulbs. These works are then installed on walls and ceilings, creating multi-dimensional prisms that refract and reflect colored light shards.

26th September Competition

The 26th September Competition presented by the Alexandria Museum of Art is juried exhibition selected from national and international submissions highlighting contemporary art practices in all media. Featuring original art created within the past two years, artworks were selected for the exhibition from over 300 submissions by this year's artist-juror, Stewart Nachmias, and will be included in a full-color print catalogue. Total cash awards of $2,000 allocated to juror-designated award winners will be presented on September 6.
